thumbnail creation
How can I create thumbnails icons of files, icons that are actually a preview of the content?

hints at looking in the gconf-editor, into /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/. There for a lot of mimetypes programmes are configured, e.g.
- /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer
- evince-thumbnailer
- dia -t png
